Welfare Officer – Cultural Mediator

A call for the position of Welfare Officer-Cultural Mediator within the Psychological Service Team on a definite basis is being issued .

Cultural Mediator Responsibilities:

  • Assist with written and oral communication as needed.
  • Read through material provided and translate it in the target language, ensuring that the meaning of the source text is retained. Document the changes made to translated materials and maintain a filing system for reference.
  • Serves as interpreter at assessments, providing consecutive or simultaneous translation between languages.
  • Listens to complete statements in one language, translates to second, and translates responses from second into first language. This is to be done word by word.
  • Speak, read, and write fluently in at least two languages, one of which is usually English.
  • Translate accurately, quickly, and clearly, any live speeches, messages, voice recordings, documents and other material as needed.  It is important to be careful and attentive in providing proper meaning and include the context, tone and technical wording in the translation.
  • Compile a glossary of important words, terms and information from the requested language to English.
  • Proofread and edit final translated versions.
  • Provide feedback and insight on different cultures, rituals and traditions.
  • Working in liaison with all the staff engaged with the service-users.
  • Carrying out any other duties and responsibilities as may be required from time to time by the Unit Leader and/or the Agency.

The minimum requirements are:

  • Covering letter and detailed CV
  • Certificates
  • Valid Police Conduct
  • Two/ three references
  • Must be fluent in English language

Applicants must be fluent in English and any other language from the hereunder:

  • Arabic
  • Somali
  • French
  • Tigrinya
  • Amharic
  • Spanish
  • Bangla. 

Applicants holding related certificates and relevant experience over and above these qualifications will be given preference.   Applicants who are fluent in a third or more languages will be given preference.
