Overall purpose of the position of Social Worker
The social worker will be involved in a variety of activities to support vulnerable migrants affected by different issues, such as neglect, mental health issues, general health needs, education, employment and any other issues that might arise. This will include contacting and making referrals to other agencies and entities. The social worker will work with people who have been socially excluded or who are experiencing crisis. Their role is to provide support to enable beneficiaries to help themselves. They maintain professional relationships with beneficiaries, acting as guides, and advocates.
Social workers work in a variety of settings within a framework of relevant legislation and procedures, supporting individuals, families and groups within the reception centres and in the community. Besides the reception centres, settings may include the beneficiaries home or schools in the case of unaccompanied minors and children, hospitals or the premises of other public sector and voluntary organizations.
Social work services means that social workers work in multi-disciplinary teams.
Tasks typically involve:
- Assess vulnerabilities and special reception needs of the assigned beneficiaries;
- Support in designing individualized social plans for the assigned beneficiaries;
- Support the organisation and management of packages of support to enable service users to lead the fullest lives possible;
- Compile social reports related to case work management of the assigned beneficiaries and be responsible that the files are kept up-to-date and perfectly in order;
- Perform first screening of possible vulnerable persons at first arrivals;
- Undertaking and writing up assessments which meet specified standards and timescales;
- Conducting interviews with beneficiaries to assess and review their situation;
- Offering information to beneficiaries and their families;
- Recommending and sometimes making decisions about the best course of action for particular beneficiary;
- Liaising with and making referrals to other agencies;
- Participating in multi-disciplinary teams and meetings regarding for example child protection or mental health;
- Giving evidence in court in particular cases;
- Participating in training, supervision and team meetings.
The social worker will be responsible:
- To work in the Social Work Unit and be responsible for the interventions required on the cases allocated;
- To be actively involved with beneficiaries in group activities;
- To undertake and write up assessments which meet specified standards and timescales;
- To be knowledgeable on areas of policy in relation to this field of work;
- To participate in meetings and write up reports related to case management
- To actively work in cooperation with different agencies, entities and non-governmental organizations;
- To perform on-call duties outside the regular office hours;
- To ensure adherence to standards of care within the relevant quality framework;
- To ensure legislation, national standards and guidelines are being followed;
- To be responsible that the beneficiaries’ files are kept up-to-date and perfectly in order;
- To carry out any other duties and responsibilities as may be required from time to time by the Unit Leader Services/UMAS Protection Services.

Consultation
- Consults with Unit Leader Services/UMAS Protection Services in resolving issues and problems which are of sensitive and/ or strategic nature;
- Coordinates and communicates with other members of staff as necessary;
- Coordinates and communicates with external parties as appropriate.
Self-Improvement
- Keeps up to date with new developments in the area of EU affairs and the welfare of asylum seekers as well as related technologies and methodologies;
- Keeps up to date with the latest projects and initiatives undertake by AWAS.
Other
- Performs other job-related duties as necessary or as designed or as assigned.
Supervision Received
- Direction from Unit Leader especially in sensitive or continuous issues. External supervision is provided by the Agency.
Working Conditions
• May be requested to work outside office hours to meet deadlines and/ or in crises situations.
This job description may vary from time to time according to the exigencies of the Agency. The employee may be asked to carry out other tasks or duties as may be determined by AWAS Senior Management and as may be determined by national emergencies.
The minimum requirements are:
A pertinent first degree at MQF level 6 in Social Work, recognised by the Social Work Board. Foreign qualifications shall be provided together with the MQRIC recognition.
Candidates who are presently completing their fourth year of studies in the B.A (hons) in Social Work shall be considered for this position and may be offered a more junior position in the interim until the full qualification is confirmed.
Salary:
The salary for the post of Social Worker in the year 2025 is equivalent to €26,930.00 per annum.
